Rockmart grew up as a railroad depot town and was incorporated in 1872. Its name comes from the slate, limestone and clay found in the area, which drew Welsh slate miners here in the 1850s.
Most of the town is in Polk County, with part stretching into Paulding. US-278 connects it to Dallas to the east and Cedartown to the west.
